Welfare Vehicle on tour
Meet the team
In August four cyclists set off on an
incredible 1,863-mile journey from London
to Fez, Morocco. One of Blakedale’s trusty
Welfare Vehicles went along for the ride,
providing home comforts, cooking and
sanitation facilities to the team as they
rode across Europe and crossed continents
into Africa.
With the names “George & Amelia”
and the words “Helping Save Lives. Big
Hearts, Little Children” emblazoned on
their cycling shirts, it was clear that this
adventure had a very special purpose that
was indeed very close to the hearts of the
four men taking part.
Among the cyclists were the fathers of
George and Amelia who were both born
with serious heart defects and are currently
undergoing treatment. Their experiences
inspired the team to raise funds for
Great Ormond Street and Evelina London
Children’s Hospitals so that more children
might benefit from their lifesaving research
and care.
One of the cyclists called Blakedale HQ
and by chance spoke to Joint MD,
Carmen Bowley, who on hearing the
team’s story offered to donate a Welfare
Vehicle for the duration of their challenge.
“Kerry Gilligan, PA to the Blakedale
Directors, has been closely involved in
liaising with the intrepid cyclists to ensure
the Welfare Vehicle was as ready for this
epic journey as they were!” says Carmen.
When they’re not on tour, Blakedale’s
Mobile Welfare Units provide somewhere
safe, warm and comfortable for
maintenance, utilities and construction
crews.
All vans are fitted with at least 7 seats,
toilets, heating, microwaves, quick boil
kettles, hot and cold wash facilities, tow
bars, reverse cameras, rear beacons
and run lock mechanisms, as well as full
Chapter 8 decals and chevrons.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I have recently been given the extra
responsibility to look after all Traffic
Management Vehicles that are 3.5t and
below. I keep a track of the mileages
they do, arrange the MOTs, services
and repairs, and tax all of these
vehicles when they are due. I record
this information and also liaise with
customers to help them resolve any
issues they may have.
WHY BLAKEDALE?
Blakedale is a family-run company and
all of the staff are very friendly. It’s a
great place to work because everyone
gets on well together and we often get
visits and cuddles from Crumb.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT
AT WORK?
I am a Shodan Black Belt (1st Dan) in
Goju Ryu Karate. I’ve been practicing
Karate for three to four hours every
week, for the last four years. When I’m
not training, I love cooking and baking,
and trying out new recipes for different
dietary requirements such as vegan and
gluten free. I also have five dogs (a Toy
Poodle, a Papillion, two Pomeranians
and one Chihuahua/Pomeranian cross),
so I go on lots of walks and hikes with
them in the countryside, too.
MOST LIKELY TO PLAY YOU IN A FILM?
Jennifer Lawrence. She often plays
roles where she is energetic and active.
I also like to think that I am as good
at fighting as her character Raven/
Mystique is in X-Men.
